LITHONIA, Ga.-- DeKalb County police are investigating the death of a man after three employees wrestled him to the ground outside of a Lithonia Walmart.
Around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, the middle-aged man left the Walmart on Fairington Road. Two Walmart employees and a security guard followed him out to the parking lot. They wrestled him to the ground, and were holding him for police. When DeKalb County police arrived, the man was not responsive. He was taken to DeKalb Medical Hillandale where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will determine how he died.
A Walmart spokesman said they're cooperating with the police investigation. In a statement, Kayla Whaling with Walmart corporate communications said, "Our associates are trained that the safety of our customers and our associates is our first priority. No amount of merchandise is worth someone's life. Associates are trained to disengage from situations that would put themselves or others at risk."
The two Walmart employees have been suspended with pay during the investigation. The security guard involved is no longer with the company.
