Twin sister of missing Atlanta blogger pleads: 'Let us know you're OK'

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 28 Januari 2013 | 23.17

HOUSTON, Texas -- The twin sister of a missing Atlanta woman looked into a news camera Sunday night and pleaded with her sister to call.

"Everyone just wants to know that you're OK," Catherine Erickson said.

Her sister, Victoria Moon Erickson, 31, vanished Jan. 21 while travelling through Houston.

Catherine said during a news interview that Vicky may have just wanted to get away, to be alone.

That wouldn't be unusual, she said.

But she said Vicky has never left without telling anyone.

Police in Houston are not ruling out kidnapping.

Vicky had been travelling the country on a personal adventure, and writing her blog, called "Permission to Heal."

"It's not unlike her to want to get away for awhile," Catherine said.

Catherine is in Houston to help search for Vicky, and she spoke of how Vicky is a committed vegan and an enthusiastic vegan chef.

Most recently Vicky was helping in the kitchen of a raw-food restaurant in Houston.

Suddenly, she disappeared -- taking nothing with her.

"No car, no cell phone, no laptop, a majority of clothes and shoes left behind," Catherine said.

She also left her dog behind.

Catherine said maybe Vicky just wanted to "go off the grid" as she put it -- one more adventure.

Their foster brother, Paul Samford, posted on Reddit, asking for people to help look for her. And he said during a phone interview that he's always been worried about Vicky travelling alone.

"When she and I would talk about any of those kind of things, I would let her know that I didn't think that was the safest, greatest idea. But she's fearless. She's just fearless, she always has been."

And not knowing anything about Vicky's disappearance is agony for the family.

"We just want to know that you're safe and you're welcome back any time," Catherine said into the camera, beginning to cry. "I love you, okay?"

Catherine and Vicky will turn 32 on Tuesday, January 29.

Investigators in Houston are looking into everything -- people Vicky has met on her travels, possible issues with her health and medication. There is no end to online speculation about the case, but so far there is very little definitive information about what happened.

Catherine said she is convinced Vicky can survive and thrive in any adverse situation.

"One of the first things that came to mind were her survival skills," Catherine said. "My sister's the strongest person I've ever had the privilege of being close to."

Thieves use car to smash into Foot Locker

ATLANTA -- Burglars used a car to smash into an Atlanta shoe store and steal merchandise early Monday.

The robbery happened shortly before 3 a.m. at the Foot Locker on Metropolitan Parkway.

Atlanta Police dispatchers said the thieves drove a Dodge Intrepid into the front of the store, breaking a window. They got into the store through the broken window.

Atlanta Police Sgt. Greg Lyon said store security video showed the suspects backing the Dodge into the store. About 15 suspects took clothing and shoes before escaping in a getaway car, which appeared to be a dark red Chevrolet pickup truck with a bright light bar on its back end.

The Dodge used in the robbery was reported stolen out of Clayton County, Lyon said. It was found abandoned in the Foot Locker parking lot.

Jury wanted to indict JonBenet Ramsey's parents

JonBenet Ramsey (File Photo)

BOULDER, Colo. -- There's new information in the JonBenet Ramsey case.

The grand jury actually voted to indict her parents in 1999. That's according to an article published in the Boulder Daily Camera over the weekend.

There was reportedly no indictment because the district attorney didn't believe he had enough evidence to prosecute the case.

JonBenet was a 6-year-old beauty queen found murdered in her parents' Colorado basement in 1996.

Her parents moved to metro Atlanta after her death. JonBenet and her mother are both buried in Marietta.

The Boulder D.A. cleared the Ramseys and their adult son of any wrongdoing in 2008.

A new look for 11Alive

WXIA -- 11Alive has a new graphic look.

In the top bar of the new graphic box you will find story information as well as the name and title of someone being interviewed.

The second bar is the new Rundown, which is now called the Line Up.  The next three stories coming up will be shown.

The third line is where headlines, traffic information, weather, social engagement and breaking news can be found.

If the wording on the graphics seems to be cut off on the screen, or if you never see the third line, your television setting may need to be changed. In most cases, this is caused by the viewing option for the screen to be on a zoom or stretch setting. To put your screen in the right aspect ratio, cycle through the screen options until you see the correct full image.  Most remotes have a button that can be used to change this setting.  Check out the photo to see if your remote has one of these options. If you can't find this on your remote, you will need to enter your television menu setting to make the change there.

The new look comes after extensive research and based on viewer feedback

Here are some highlights of what we learned in the research to help design the new look:
-Color coding various types of news - research has told us that viewers want things simplified and organized. It visually allows people to know what type of story we are doing or about to do.
-The Lineup - Integrating what is on the air with what is immediately coming up next.  Allowing the viewers to count on us to always be able to know what the upcoming three stories are.
-Balancing the right amount of graphical information on the screen at one time.  Research says viewers don't just want a word or two to name the story.  They want enough information to help them understand what the actual news is and what is the most updated information.

Along with the new graphics, viewers will hear new music being used in productions.

Skycam images from WTVJ show a Rolls Royce, reportedly owned by rapper Rick Ross, after it hit a building in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013. (WTVJ Miami)

MIAMI (WTVJ) -- Fort Lauderdale Police are investigating after a shooting led to a Rolls Royce crashing into an apartment building early Monday.

Police officials say shots were fired around 5 a.m. in the area of Southeast 15th Avenue and E. Las Olas Boulevard

The silver Rolls Royce was traveling eastbound on Las Olas when another vehicle opened fire on it, police said.

When the Rolls tried to get away, it crashed into the building at 311 Southeast 15th Avenue. Neither of the two people inside were injured, police said.

Police are still looking for the gunman or gunmen.

The names of the victims inside the Rolls weren't being released because they're in fear for their lives, police said. Witnesses said rapper Rick Ross was inside the Rolls.

"The occupants of the vehicle have asked for their information to be withheld from being released," Fort Lauderdale Police spokeswoman Det. DeAnna Garcia said. "They obviously, with everything that just took place, are fearful for their lives and their families lives."

Witnesses said they heard as many as 20 shots.

To the president, Stanley said: "Mr. President you have an awfully big room."

Stanley is no stranger to big rooms himself, pastoring more than 30,000 people through North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, Buckhead Church, Gwinnett Church in Duluth, Watermarke Church in Canton and Browns Bridge Community Church in Cumming.

Hawks entertain injury-riddled Wolves

(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Hawks are 3-8 in the month of January, but they will try to finish the month out strong, starting with a Monday matinee against the injury-ravaged Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Hawks have lost two in a row and four of their last five. They fell at home to the San Antonio Spurs, 98-93, on Saturday and lost in Brooklyn Friday night, 94-89.

The loss in Brooklyn hurt even more than normal. Guard Lou Williams came down on a fastbreak, his knee buckled and the worst fears were confirmed. Williams, who finished second in Sixth Man of the Year voting last season as a 76er, tore his ACL and will miss the rest of the season.

"We're going to miss him," said head coach Larry Drew. "He was a leader in the locker room. He's a great person to have on the team. We all know what his talents are on the court.

"But in these type situations, you just have to regroup, you have to move on."

The majority of Williams' minutes are expected to go to Vanderbilt rookie John Jenkins. He scored nine points on 3-for-12 shooting in almost 23 minutes against the Spurs.

You'll forgive the Timberwolves if they don't have sympathy for an injury. The team was granted a hardship exception by the NBA because of their injury situation and were allowed to sign an extra player to a 10-day contract.

Mickael Gelabale and Chris Johnson were both signed Saturday morning, then the two scored Minnesota's first 23 points of the fourth quarter that night against the Houston Rockets.

The T-Wolves beat the Rockets, 92-79, to snap a five-game losing streak.

"You've got to give them a lot of credit," said guard J.J. Barea. "They stayed ready. They were playing, and they did a great job of staying ready. That's how you need, you need guys who have a 10-day contract and they take advantage. They get the opportunity, it's a big opportunity for them, too, and they did a great job."

Johnson scored 15 points and Gelabale added 11. Four other Wolves scored in double figures, led by 21 from veteran Andrei Kirilenko.

The injured list for Minnesota is long. All-NBA forward Kevin Love is out with a broken hand. Brandon Roy and Chase Budinger are sidelined indefinitely after surgery. Malcolm Lee is done for the season.

Even Nikola Pekovic, Dante Cunningham and Alexey Shved missed the Rockets game with various problems and none of those three are expected to be back for the Atlanta game.

The Timberwolves bested the Hawks, 108-103, in Minnesota on Jan. 8. The Hawks had won 11 straight against the Wolves prior to their victory earlier in the month. The T'Wolves are winless in nine straight at the Hawks.

Agreement reached to sell Sacramento Kings to Seattle group

SACRAMENTO (USA Today) -- The Seattle group led by hedge fund manager Chris Hansen, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and the Nordstrom family has finalized a deal to buy a controlling interest in the Sacramento Kings, two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.

The people requested anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced. The Maloofs, who have owned majority interest in the team since 1999, will sell the 65% they control for a price based on a $525 million valuation of the franchise (approximately $341 million). The remaining 35% belongs to minority owners and would likely be transferred in the transaction so long as it's approved by the NBA's Board of Governors. The finalizing of the deal was first reported by NBCSports.com and ESPN.com.

"The NBA received an executed Purchase and Sale Agreement for the transfer of a controlling interest in the Sacramento Kings from the Maloof family to an investor group led by Christopher Hansen," the NBA said in a statement released Monday morning. "The proposed transaction is subject to the approval of the NBA Board of Governors and has been referred to the Board's committee process for review."

Kings co-owner Gavin Maloof, on behalf of the Maloof family, released a statement shortly after the NBA: "We have always appreciated and treasured our ownership of the Kings and have had a great admiration for the fans and our team members. We would also like thank Chris Hansen for his professionalism during our negotiation. Chris will be a great steward for the franchise."

The Hansen-Ballmer group is expected to file for relocation to Seattle before the league's March 1 deadline, and the Board of Governors would consider their bid at a mid-April meeting. The Seattle SuperSonics, as they would be called after that team became the Oklahoma City Thunder in a 2008 sale, would play at Key Arena in Seattle next season. A new facility is expected to be opened two years later. The Kings franchise was valued at just $300 million by Forbes magazine in 2012, but this current valuation of $525 million would surpass the league-record $450 million paid for the Golden State Warriors in July 2010.

The odds appear slim that this deal will fail, but NBA Commissioner David Stern has made it clear that Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, a former NBA All-Star point guard for the Phoenix Suns, will have a chance to make another last-ditch attempt to save his hometown team. Johnson, a Sacramento native, has been organizing an ownership group and an arena plan with the intention of making the sort of competitive counteroffer that would convince the NBA to block the relocation. It's a similar situation the one in April 2011, when the Kings appeared headed for Anaheim before Johnson's bid in front of the Board of Governor's led to the team staying.

In a statement made late Sunday night, Johnson didn't wave a white flag, while emphasizing Sacramento as a one-team town that provides the NBA more of a captive audience than Seattle.

"Sacramento has proven that it is a strong NBA market with a fan base that year in and year out has demonstrated a commitment to the Kings by selling out 19 of 27 seasons in a Top 20 market and owning two of the longest sellout streaks in NBA history," he said. "When it comes to keeping the team in our community, Sacramento is playing to win. In particular, we have been focused like a laser on identifying an ownership group that will both have the financial resources desired by the NBA and the vision to make the Kings the NBA equivalent of what the Green Bay Packers have been in the NFL."

Stern told news reporters in London last week the league had not received a purchase agreement. But Stern kept open the door for Johnson to make his case directly to the league.

"The Mayor of Sacramento has asked me, 'Well, if this comes to pass because we've been reading it in the newspapers - and he knows that anything he reads in the newspapers is likely to be accurate - could I come in and address the board of governors or the relocation committee?' " Stern said Thursday. "And I said, 'Always.' ... Communities have supported us, and many that haven't, but Sacramento has been particularly supportive (and) are always welcome to present. The mayor has been in before (in April of 2011 during the Anaheim chapter). That's it, other than the speculation of what's going on."

Stern and the NBA, alongside major sports business power Anschultz Entertainment Group, helped form Johnson's plan to keep the team in Sacramento before the Maloofs backed out of an arena deal last February. AEG recently re-emerged and is still on board with a possible arena plan, though that's merely one of the many avenues Johnson has been exploring.

Atlanta-based Georgia Gulf becoming Axiall Corp.

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 14 Januari 2013 | 23.17

ATLANTA -- Georgia Gulf Corp. will changes its name to Axiall Corp. when its $2 billion acquisition of PPG Industries Inc.'s chlor-alkali and derivatives business closes.

It will trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "AXLL."

The company said it its new name is based on the word "axial," which refers to the formation of an axis and is used often in chemistry to describe bonds and flow.

"The new name is the result of more than five months of effort and creativity by a group of employees from both Georgia Gulf and PPG," said Paul Carrico, Georgia Gulf president and CEO, in a statement. "The new and distinctive brand represents a clear break from the legacy names of the two businesses, and gives us the flexibility to enter new markets, make future acquisitions, and diversify our portfolio without the need to rebrand our organization."

Georgia Gulf is an Atlanta-based building materials and chemicals company.

Coca-Cola ads will join obesity debate

NEW YORK (AP) - Coca-Cola became one of the world's most powerful brands by equating its soft drinks with happiness. Now it's taking to the airwaves for the first time to address a growing cloud over the industry: obesity.

The company on Monday will begin airing a two-minute spot during the highest-rated shows on CNN, Fox News and MSNBC in hopes of becoming a stronger voice in the intensifying debate over sodas and their impact on public health.

The ad lays out Coca-Cola's record of providing drinks with fewer calories and notes that weight gain is the result of consuming too many calories of any kind - not just soda.

Coca-Cola says the campaign will kick off a variety of moves to help address obesity in the year ahead, such as providing more diet options at soda fountains.

For Coca-Cola, the world's No. 1 beverage company, the ads reflect mounting pressures on the industry. Later this year, New York City is set to put into effect a first-in-the-nation cap on the size of soft drinks sold at restaurants, movie theaters, sports arenas and other venues. The mayor of Cambridge, Mass., has already proposed a similar measure, saying she was inspired by New York's move.

And when PepsiCo, the No. 2 soda maker, recently signed a wide-ranging endorsement deal with pop singer Beyonce, critics called for the singer to drop the contract or donate the money to groups that fund health initiatives.

Diana Garza Ciarlante, a spokeswoman for Coca-Cola, said the new ads aren't a reaction to any negative public sentiment but the company felt it needed to address "the issue of the times" and be part of the discussion on obesity.

"We have not done a good enough job in telling our story and being consistent in telling our story," she said, noting the company had to be careful in its messaging to remain consistent with its brand voice and avoid sounding "preachy."

In the ad, a narrator notes that obesity is an issue that "concerns all of us" but people can make a difference when they "come together." The spot was produced by Brighthouse and Citizen2 and is intended to reflect Coca-Cola's corporate responsibility among cable news viewers.

Another ad, which will run later this week during "American Idol" and before the Super Bowl, is much more reminiscent of catchy, upbeat advertising people have come to expect from Coca-Cola. It features a montage of activities that add up to burning off the "140 happy calories" in a can of Coke: walking a dog, dancing, sharing a laugh with friends and doing a victory dance after bowling a strike.

Garza Ciarlante said the 30-second ad, a version of which ran in Brazil last month, is intended to address confusion about the number of calories in soda. She said the company's consumer research showed people thought there were as many as 900 calories in a can of soda.

Garza Ciarlante declined to give details on the actions Coca-Cola has planned for the year ahead. But among the options under consideration is putting the amount of activity needed to burn off the calories in a drink on cans and bottles.

Coca-Cola notes it has already made several moves to help customers make smarter choices, such as putting calorie counts on the front of its cans and bottles in the U.S. Last year, it also started posting calorie information on its vending machines ahead of a regulation that will require soda companies to do so by 2014.

Public concern over calories counts is apparent in Coca-Cola's business. In North America, all the growth in its soda business the past 15 years has come from low- and no-calorie drinks, such as Coke Zero. Diet sodas now account for nearly a third of its sales in the U.S. and Canada. Other beverages, such as sports drinks and bottled water, are also fueling growth.

Even with the growing popularity of diet sodas, however, overall soda consumption in the U.S. has declined steadily since 1998, according to the industry tracker Beverage Digest.

Ga. lawmakers back at work

ATLANTA -- Georgia's lawmakers are back in the Capitol for the start of their annual 40-day legislative session.

The House and Senate gaveled into session at 10 a.m. Monday.

While the first day is mostly for formalities, the Senate could vote to set an internal rule capping lobbyist gifts to lawmakers at $100. House Speaker David Ralston has said Republican leaders will likely introduce legislation this week creating a prohibition on those gifts.

Gov. Nathan Deal will give his annual State of the State speech Thursday and unveil his budget plans. Republicans, who dominate both chambers, expect they will once against need to cut state spending because revenues have not met projections in a weak economy.

Unofficially the session began Sunday evening in fine Southern style: with food, fun and, of course, more than a little informal lobbying. The event is called the Wild Hog Supper and has been held every year since 1962.

Sponsored by a nonprofit called Friends of Agriculture Foundation Inc., the party raises money for the Georgia Food Bank Association. But the foundation is essentially a collection of lobbyists who will spend the next three months asking lawmakers for votes.

The supper offers interested parties face time with the state's leaders, including Gov. Nathan Deal.

Watch out for used cars flooded by Hurricane Sandy

"If you turn around and have to replace a transmission and spend $4,000, have you saved anything?" Dunn asked during an interview with 11Alive's Jennifer Leslie. "You're always running the risk of something like that happening."

Dunn is president of Women's Automotive Connection, Inc. She said she has no doubt that vehicles submerged by Hurricane Sandy will eventually be sold in Georgia.

A total of 15,000 damaged cars are sitting on a rarely-used airport runway on Long Island ready to be auctioned.

Dunn said in some cases the title will look clean, but not the history.

An online search of the VIN number will show whether the vehicle's ever been totaled by insurance. The car history might also describe the vehicle as a "flood car."

Dunn also suggests getting the vehicle checked by a certified mechanic.

"The saltwater will corrode everything," Dunn said.

Dunn met 11Alive at Crabapple Car Care to point out some of the warning signs. She looked over an older vehicle from Florida that was exposed to years of salt, explaining that those are the same elements that do so much damage so quickly in a Hurricane.

"Once it's been salvaged, it's never going to be right again," Dunn added.

Excessive rust underneath can start right away, but Dunn says damage to the computer systems might not show up for months or years down the road.

New evidence to be revealed in Colo. theater shooting hearing

Colorado theater shooting suspect James Holmes in court on Monday, July 23, 2012

CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- This week will be our first look at the overwhelming evidence against Aurora Theater shooting suspect James Holmes.

A weeklong preliminary hearing, essentially a dress rehearsal for trial, will include graphic details never before revealed to the public.

Many of the details revealed this week will be brand new because of the gag order in the theater shooting case.

Survivors, families, and the media will gather at the Arapahoe County Justice Center Monday morning.

Without question there is enormous public interest in this case.

News outlets from around the country are in Colorado.

Victims' families have flown in from across the country and they expect this to be a very difficult week.

Many have never stepped foot in the courthouse or been in the same room with the suspect.

"We're all going to get through this process. It's very traumatizing," said Jessica Watts, who lost her cousin Jonathan Blunk on July 20.

Blunk is one of the 12 people who died, while 70 others were injured.

"It's almost like an extended family. We'll definitely be sitting together in court," Watts said.

Watts is trying to prepare the others who haven't been to court.

"The main shock will definitely be them seeing him for the first time," Watts said.

Another shock for the families will be the evidence revealed in court.

"[There will be] a lot more detail about that night," Watts said.

Watts says they've been told to expect video and photos from inside the theater.

"They are going to be of the wounded and of the dead," Watts said.

Watts has tried to prepare herself by reading the coroner's report, which says her cousin was shot four times with four guns, yet somehow stayed alive for 46 minutes.

9NEWS legal analyst Scott Robinson says families should expect many more details than are typically revealed in a preliminary hearing.

"The evidence is going to be pretty awful to listen to. I anticipate that this will be enormously traumatizing for anyone who had a loved one in that theater," Robinson said.

Robinson says both sides will lay out their strategies.

Expect the prosecution to reveal key evidence and the defense to lay the groundwork for a possible insanity plea.

"Because of the dozens and dozens of people directly affected by this shooting incident, I expect it'll be more of a mini trial," Robinson said.

Robinson says the evidence against the suspect is so strong, there's a chance he could accept a plea deal.

If that were to happen, this may be the closest to a trial these families, and all of us, will ever see.

Watts says the Arapahoe County District Attorney asked that the families not be alone this week.

"I'm going to go in there with a blank mind. It's definitely going to be emotional but I'm hoping that I'm going to get some answers," Watts said.

Watts wants answers about that night and how it played out.

Nearly six months after the shootings, this week marks a painful new chapter for these families who have already been through so much.

Water main break shuts down section of Clairmont Road

DeKalb County, GA-  Traffic is moving again, albeit slowly, on a section of Clairmont Road near the DeKalb Peachtree Airport.

Over the weekend, a 1/4 mile section of the street was closed after a water main rupture in a 36" pipe.

The pipe was repaired on Sunday and this morning, two lanes were open to traffic, one in each direction. Later today, paving crews are expected to arrive on scene to begin covering the repair with asphalt.

DeKalb County is in the midst of a $1.35 billion water/sewer upgrade and Brennan said that this main was on the list to be replaced sometime within the next five years.

Brennan added that there was no construction in the area and because it is relatively warm for this time of year the water main likely gave out due to age.

New year, old challenges for DeKalb School Board

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb County students are still on holiday break Monday, but the school board is at work, with their first meeting of the new year Monday night.

Four new board members will be sworn in Monday afternoon to join the five who were sworn in last week.

The DeKalb board has big challenges ahead in 2013. They'll have to deal with SACS putting the system's accreditation on probation last month.

The board is accused of unethical behavior and money mismanagement including $12 million of debt for new textbooks that were never purchased.

The DeKalb District Attorney's office is investigating how that money was spent and if it involved criminal activity.

Alabama and Notre Dame meet in BCS title tilt

Written by
The Sports Network

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Two of the most storied programs in NCAA history will collide at Sun Life Stadium on Monday night, as the Alabama Crimson Tide and Notre Dame Fighting Irish square off with the BCS National Championship on the line.

It is a familiar setting for Nick Saban and his squad, as Alabama will be playing for its third national title in the last four years, hoping to become the first team since Nebraska in the early 1990s to complete that feat.

The defending national champions were almost left on the outside looking in on this game, as the team opened the season with nine straight wins, before suffering what looked like a devastating loss late in November to Texas A&M in Tuscaloosa (29-24). However, teams in front of the Crimson Tide faltered down the stretch, while Alabama took care of its business the rest of the way, including knocking off a tough Georgia squad in the SEC Championship Game (32-28) in what amounted to a BCS semifinal, with the winner moving into the national title game.

Alabama's postseason resume is obviously lengthy, as the team has captured 14 national championships in all (10 consensus), including last year's 21-0 shutout of LSU. This is Alabama's third appearance in the BCS Title Game. The Crimson Tide lead the nation in all-time bowl appearances (59) and bowl victories (33). This marks the ninth straight season the team has earned a bowl bid.

A two-time National Coach of the Year, Brian Kelly has once again transformed a program. After leading Cincinnati to an undefeated regular season in his third year at the helm in 2009, he has done it again, this time in South Bend, where Notre Dame makes its return to the biggest stage. The Fighting Irish sit atop the national polls heading into the championship game at a flawless 12-0, which includes victories over four top-25 foes. The Irish are the first team in the BCS era to play for a national championship after starting the season unranked. BYU was the last team to claim a national title after starting the season unranked (1984).

Notre Dame began the 2012 season with a thorough drubbing of Navy in Ireland (50-10). Victories over Michigan State, Michigan, Miami-Florida and Oklahoma showcased Notre Dame's defensive prowess along the way. It wasn't always easy though, as the Irish needed an overtime period to get past Stanford (20-13) and three extra sessions to edge out Pittsburgh (29-26). However, victories over Boston College (21-6), Wake Forest (38-0) and USC (22-13) finished off an unbeaten campaign and secured a spot atop the national polls and an invite to the team's first-ever BCS Championship Game.

Notre Dame has 11 national titles to its credit, although the last one came back in 1988. The Irish sit with a 15-16 all-time bowl record, as the postseason has not been kind to the team since the mid-90s. Notre Dame experienced a nine-game losing streak in bowls from 1994-2006, but finally ended the skein with back-to-back wins over Hawaii (2008) and Miami-Florida (2010). Last season, the Irish dropped an 18-14 decision to Florida State in the Champs Sports Bowl.

Alabama and Notre Dame have met six previous times, with Notre Dame claiming victory in five of those games. Still, these teams haven't met since 1987. The most famous clash took place in the 1973 Sugar Bowl, when third-ranked Notre Dame edged out top-ranked Alabama, 24-23 in what was called the "Game of the Century."

Nick Saban acknowledged how special this game is.

"We are very excited about coming to South Florida and I congratulate Notre Dame and Coach Kelly and his players on an undefeated season and their number one ranking," said Saban. "They are a fantastic team and it's always a special occasion to play against Notre Dame, and especially for the national championship."

Saban has certainly done a remarkable job in Tuscaloosa, as it seems like he has a never-ending supply of All-Americans coming in and out the program, providing the team with an opportunity to win the SEC and national championship annually. This season is obviously no different, All-Americans pepper the lineup on both sides of the ball.

The Alabama offense flourished this season thanks to steady play under center, a dominant offensive line and a couple of great tailbacks. Overall, Alabama finished up averaging 38.5 ppg, while gaining over 200 yards both on the ground (224.6 ypg) and through the air (214.5 ypg). In addition, the team was able to finish as the top red-zone offense in the nation, scoring 89 percent of the time, including touchdowns in 41-of-57 opportunities.

Of the team's six All-Americans this year, three reside along the offensive line in First-Teamers Chance Warmack (guard) and Barrett Jones (center), along with Second-Teamer D.J. Fluker (tackle). Jones, a two-time selection, also won the Rimington Award as the top pivot in the country.

That certainly had to make quarterback A.J. McCarron (Third-Team All-American) feel safe when dropping back, as the junior signal-caller completed a steady 66.8 percent of his passes, for 2,669 yards, with 26 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Freshman Amari Cooper emerged as a true game-breaker on the outside, leading the team in receptions (53), receiving yards (895) and TD catches (9).

The passing game was also aided by the strong running of both junior Eddie Lacy and freshman T.J. Yeldon. Both put up 1,000 yards or more on the ground, as Lacy finished with 1,182 yards on 6.4 yards per carry and 16 touchdowns, while Yeldon netted an even 1,000 yards on 6.5 yards per touch and 11 scores.

Defense has been the name of the game in Tuscaloosa under Saban and this season is no different, as Alabama ranked second nationally in points allowed (10.7 ppg), first in rush defense (79.8 ypg), fourth in pass defense (166.2 ypg) and first in total defense (246.0 ypg).

A pair of First-Team All-Americans reside on the defensive side of the ball in junior linebacker C.J. Mosley and junior cornerback Dee Milliner. Mosley, who has already indicated that he will return for his senior season, paced the team in tackles (99), with 7.0 TFL, 4.0 sacks, two interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Fellow linebackers Trey DePriest (56 tackles) and Nico Johnson (54 stops) were a distant second and third on the team in tackles.

A talented secondary was led by Milliner (51 tackles, two INTs, one fumble recovery), but he is certainly not alone, as senior Robert Lester (42 tackles, four INTs) is an NFL-calibber defensive back as well.

The Irish have excelled this season and it probably isn't a coincidence that the team resembles an SEC squad in a number of areas. Notre Dame has run the table this season with dominant play along both lines, a steady diet of the run and aggressive defensive play.

Notre Dame hasn't put up gaudy scoring totals this year at 26.8 ppg, but the team has moved the ball well with a balanced attack, also averaging over 200 yards both rushing (202.5 ypg) and passing (218.8 ypg).

Sophomore quarterback Everett Golson has learned on the job and is a much move savvy signal-caller now than at the beginning on the season. Golson has completed 58.9 percent of his throws on the season, for 2,135 yards, with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions, but his athleticism in the pocket allows him to extend plays and make something out of nothing.

Brian Kelly thinks play in the red zone is a key to this contest.

"Well, if you just look at the start of the year to the end of the year, it's been a progression for Everett, especially in those areas where you put points on the board," said Kelly. "So when you're trying to look at an A.J. McCarron who's an experienced player coming back versus Golson, you're going to give A.J., early in the season, obviously the edge because he's been there.

Everett obviously was learning along the season, and he's gotten better as we've gotten closer. So we think we've addressed those through just maturity and understanding."

Golson has also benefited from the play of Mackey Award winning tight end Tyler Eifert (44 receptions, 624 yards, four TDs) and wideout T.J. Jones (43 receptions, 559 yards, four TDs).

Still, it is the ground game that fuels the Irish attack. With no clear-cut workhorse in the backfield, the philosophy is fresh legs. The team boasts of a trio of quality ball carriers in Theo Riddick (880 yards, 4.9 ypc, five TDs), Cierre Wood (740 yards, 6.7 ypc, four TDs) and George Atkinson III (361 yards, 7.1 ypc, five TDs).

Where Notre Dame has really had its greatest success is on the defensive side of the football. The Irish rank first in the nation in points allowed (10.3 ppg) as well as red-zone defense, limiting foes to just eight touchdowns in 33 attempts this year.

The Irish also have star power on defense, led by unanimous All-American Manti Te'o in the middle. The senior linebacker saved his best for last, as Te'o was not only the Heisman runner-up, but became the most decorated player in NCAA history this season, by capturing the Butkus Award, Lombardi Award, Nagurski Award, Bednarik Award, Maxwell Award, Lott Trophy and the Walter Camp Player of the Year.

Te'o led the Irish with 103 total tackles and tied for third nationally in interceptions with seven. He certainly wasn't alone in making plays for Notre Dame, as sophomore end Stephon Tuitt picked up All-American honors as well, amassing 42 tackles and team-highs in both TFL (13.0) and sacks (12.0). Others in the front seven that play vital roles on this unit include fellow end Kapron Lewis-Moore (39 tackles, 8.5 TFL, 6.0 sacks), nose tackle Louis Nix III (45 tackles, 5.5 TFL, 2.0 sacks) and linebacker Prince Shembo (48 tackles, 10.5 TFL, 7.5 sacks). The secondary is highlighted by cornerback Bennett Jackson (61 tackles, four INTs) and safety Zeke Motta (61 tackles, one fumble recovery).
