Sandy Hook shooter's father: I wish he'd never been born

(NBC NEWS) -- Speaking publicly for the first time, the father of the Newtown, Conn., school killer says he wishes his son had never been born.

RELATED | The mysterious withdrawn life of Adam Lanza

In one of a series of interviews with The New Yorker that began in September, Peter Lanza says this of his son Adam, 20, who killed his mother, Nancy, before gunning down 20 pupils, six staff members and himself at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012:

"You can't get any more evil. How much do I beat up on myself about the fact that he's my son? A lot."

Lanza, a vice president for GE Energy Financial Services, was divorced from Adam's mother since 2009 and hadn't seen his son for more than two years at the time of the killings, he told the magazine for a 7,600-word story published Monday.

New Yorker writer Andrew Solomon said Lanza approached him in September because, he quoted Lanza as saying, "I want people to be afraid of the fact that this could happen to them."

"With hindsight, I know Adam would have killed me in a heartbeat, if he'd had the chance," Lanza said. "I don't question that for a minute. The reason he shot Nancy four times was one for each of us: one for Nancy; one for him; one for [his brother] Ryan; one for me."

Lanza says that by the time his son entered middle school, "it was crystal clear something was wrong." Adam was socially awkward, anxious, unable to concentrate and afflicted with insomnia.

The family thought they'd gotten an answer when Adam was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, at age 13. But after a severe reaction to the anti-anxiety drug escitalopram, he refused to take any psychotropic drugs thereafter - behavior that profoundly concerned a psychiatric specialist who treated him.

"While Adam likes to believe that he's completely logical, in fact, he's not at all," the specialist wrote in an assessment.

Still, Peter Lanza says he is convinced the Asperger's diagnosis had little to do with the mass killings. Instead, he said Asperger's may have been masking schizophrenia.

"Asperger's makes people unusual, but it doesn't make people like this," he told the magazine.

Meawhile, Lanza refuses to talk about a lingering mystery: where or how his son's body was disposed of.

"No one knows that," he says. "And no one ever will."

No debris from missing jet found

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- A Vietnamese official says searchers on ships worked throughout the night but could not find a rectangle object spotted Sunday afternoon that was thought to be one of the doors of a missing Boeing 777.

Doan Huu Gia, the chief of search and rescue coordination center, said Monday that six planes and seven ships from Vietnam were searching for the object but nothing had been found.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 went missing early Saturday morning on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

The plane lost contact with ground controllers somewhere between Malaysia and Vietnam, and searchers in a low-flying plane spotted an object that appeared to be one of the plane's doors, the state-run Thanh Nien newspaper said.

10 best foodie restaurants in Atlanta

ATLANTA -- USA TODAY's Katie Kelly Bell has compiled a list of metro Atlanta's 10 best restaurants for foodies.

10. Greenwood's on Green Street -- Opened in 1986, this Roswell restaurant is a temple of traditional Southern food, taking pride in using local produce and serving an entirely homemade menu. Mains include meatloaf, chicken pot pie, pork chop and fried chicken, but no visit to the South would be complete without ordering a veggie plate and Greenwood's is the place to do it. You'll have to choose between seasonal selections and collard greens, black-eyed peas, sweet potatoes and cheese grits. Save room for one of Greenwood's legendary from-scratch pies -- we suggest the apple.

9. JCT. Kitchen & Bar -- This is the place to go for sophisticated Southern cuisine. You'll find the usual suspects (fried chicken and shrimp n' grits) punched up with artisan ingredients and skillful preparation. The menu also has its share of surprises such as the lamb banh mi or a fried oyster po' boy. If they run out of fried chicken, and it does happen, try the fresh North Georgia trout with Brussels sprouts, bacon, apple and onion soubise, with parsley and lemon -- it's a fan favorite.

8. Tomo -- Atlanta's not-so-secret sushi treasure is Tomo Naito, who honed his skills at Nobu in Las Vegas. Named one of the Best New Sushi Restaurants in American by Bon Appetit, Tomo's pristine provender is the best in the city. Chef Naito serves up wickedly delicious offerings including a Japanese snapper nuta with scallion and sweet mustard-spiced miso or lobster cake with yuzu aioli. Don't overlook his impressive collection of Japanese whiskey and Shochu drinks.

7. Heirloom Market BBQ -- The South knows barbecue and debates rage over where to find the best, but most agree that Heirloom's quality meats and vegetables are tops in the city. Chefs Jiyeon Lee, a former music star in her native South Korea, and Cody Taylor weave together the best of Southern heritage cuisine with a Korean twist. Together they create perfectly smoked, tender meat paired with a range of sauces (we like the Hotlanta and Korean spicy) and fresh vegetable sides.

6. Taqueria del Sol -- This Atlanta-only taco franchise has a bit of a food truck vibe. The setup is simple: Get in line, order, take a seat and wait briefly. Cold beer, good margaritas and righteous tacos that highlight Southern, Mexican and Southwestern cuisines make this a no-brainer for cheap, fast, and easy chow. Daily specials are always worth trying and other best bets include the Memphis taco (chopped smoked pork with a spicy jalapeño coleslaw and tequila BBQ sauce) or the fried fish taco with poblano tartar sauce and pickled jalapeños.

5. Canoe -- Canoe is one of the city's most bucolic settings for lunch or dinner. Nestled along the Chattahoochee River, this destination dishes up the perfect setting along with award-winning cuisine and intelligent drink offerings. The menu changes often but expect to see dishes such as Georges Bank cod with house bacon, sweet potato and baby clams or hickory-grilled New York strip with roasted potato, kale and red wine jus.

4. Decatur -- Decatur is a place, not a restaurant, and it's a destination for eating -- because all one needs to do is park on any Decatur city street (free after 6 p.m.) and wander. You'll bump into mouthwatering Italian (the meatball is divine) at No. 246. or vividly fresh locally inspired cuisine at Cakes and Ale. Beer lovers must try the massive selection of drafts and Belgians at Brick Store Pub.

3. Gunshow -- Top Chef finalist and native Georgian Chef Kevin Gillespie has been wowing the locals with his intensely flavorful yet simple dishes. His new restaurant comes with a few surprises: There's no décor to speak of, no servers and no real bar. Indeed, Atlanta's ginger-haired country boy Gillespie is taking the entire idea of dining and flipping it on its head. Odd as it sounds, his food is easily some of the finest in Atlanta. Chefs also act as servers, circulating the large communal dining room with wooden platters featuring different dishes as they come out of the kitchen. If you like a dish, take it, or just wait for the next chef to wander by.

2. Restaurant Eugene -- Chef Linton Hopkins, winner of the 2012 James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Southeast 2012, is also an Atlanta native with a deep appreciation for the pick of the season. His tasting and a la carte menus feature exquisitely executed dishes such as a trio of beets with pot likker, kale, and Tennessee bacon or an herbed grouper with shiitake fondue, clams, and radish salad. Expect Southern inspiration, but conceived in fresh, delightful way (hoppin' John with benne cream or Tennessee black truffles with rice grits and Jerusalem artichoke).

1. Bacchanalia -- This restaurant is easily number one in Atlanta largely because it remains the city's truest expression of fine dining. Coursed meals with emphasis on locally grown, entirely organic preparations, much of it from Chef Annie Quatrano's and Clifford Harrison's farm. A delicate touch with flavor belies the complexity in each dish. Housed in a repurposed warehouse, the ambiance is sophisticated and comfortably hip. Expect to see the following, though the menu changes constantly: Jamison Farm lamb with pumpkin, sweet onions, rutabaga, and natural jus, or the Summerland Farm egg with Maya's autumn greens and heirloom grains with sweet potato.

NSA leaker Edward Snowden to speak at SXSW 2014 today

AUSTIN, TX -- Three days down, seven to go.

Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden will participate in a session at SXSW 2014 on Monday to discuss the controversy over government surveillance.

Snowden, whose disclosures of secret documents detailed NSA surveillance tactics, will chat about how the tech industry has been impacted and what can be done to protect citizens.

Snowden will join the conference via video call from Russia, where he has sought asylum.

At the open of the SXSW festival, Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Ks., urged organizers to cancel the talk. "Rewarding Mr. Snowden's behavior in this way encourages the very lawlessness he exhibited," said Pompeo in a letter to SXSW organizers.

Over the weekend, SXSW 2014 delivered insight on the rise of technology in the health industry, while one NBA owner shared his take on the controversial currency Bitcoin.

FULL COVERAGE | See all the latest and greatest from SXSW from USA TODAY's coverage

Here's a look at the five things we learned after day 3:

TECH BREATHING LIFE INTO HEALTH BUSINESS

We've got smartphone apps to play our music, connect with our friends or kill time with a game or two. But apps will soon tackle more serious endeavors, such as helping you lose weight or even avoid a heart attack.

The collaboration between health and tech is among the hot topics at SXSW. With companies building more medical sensors, expect the health gadget business to boom.

Ideas range from smoking apps that encourage users to quit by leveraging their contact lists or breath analyzers that can catch lung cancer.

As Dr. Leslie Saxon, cardiologist at USC's Center for Body Computing, tells USA TODAY: "There's no more compelling app than one for your health or (the health of) your loved ones."

TAKING PHONE CALLS FROM 28,000 FEET

Air travelers are likely familiar with Gogo, the company behind the Inflight service that provides fliers with access to the Internet.

The company is moving one step further by testing a service to let fliers make phone calls from their cellphones. USA TODAY's Ed Baig tried out the service in a demo at SXSW and said call quality is about the same as your average cellphone call.

But do fliers really want to hear all these phone conversations while in the air? Gogo Vice President Brad Jaehn says the option won't be available in North America any time soon but could appear on international flights.

"Outside of the United States, there is some demand for voice calling on an airplane," says Jaehn.

Gogo voice calls are expected to roll out on flights this year.

HOOTSUITE DIVES INTO SOCIAL MARKETING

Social media management tool HootSuite is pushing to perform a similar service for businesses, according to USA TODAY tech columnist John Shinal.

The tool lets users control multiple social media accounts such as Facebook or Twitter in one platform. At SXSW, the company revealed it will include a service to allow small- and medium-sized businesses to manage marketing budgets.

Hootsuite will roll out the enterprise feature in the next few months.

POPPING UP AT A POP-UP PARTY

At SXSW, attendees never know when a party will pop up.

Tech sites such as Funny or Die and Pinterest as well as streaming music site Spotify have taken over houses and venues in Austin and transformed them into party pads where they can share more about their services.

Comedy site Funny or Die, for instance, is hosting the cast of Neighbors, a film starring Seth Rogan and Zac Efron, as well as social network Facebook.

"They come here because they want to sit down with the Facebook team and learn how to connect with their audience," says Facebook's Dustin Bramell on working with Funny or Die.

QUENCHING THIRST WITH 'FIRE AND BLOOD'

SXSW attendees have to find beverages to wash down all the barbecue and fajitas. What better way to do it than with Fire and Blood.

Brewery Ommegang worked with HBO to craft a brew for SXSW themed after the hit series Game of Thrones. The beer Fire and Blood is a red ale that pays homage to the series' red wedding from last season.

SXSW visitors can try the beer at a Game of Thrones exhibition through Thursday.
